About the artist

Martha Fagan is a plein air Impressionist painter.  A native of Connecticut for over fifty years, while raising four children, she expressed her creativity through numerous jobs as a stylist for American lifestyle magazine Country Living, co-founder of an antique shop, and owner of an organic chicken and vegetable farm.  It wasn’t until her last child headed out the door that Martha pursued art.  She earned a certificate in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design, and took her first plein air oil workshop in 2016 with master painter John Clayton, through the Cape School of Art, one of the country’s preeminent outdoor painting schools.  Since moving to Provincetown, she spends as much time outdoors as possible and has sought teachers who have trained with Henry Hensche or had the influence of his teachings and those who base their art on light and color placement. Martha has worked with artists Hilda Neily, John Clayton, Margaret McWethy, Mary Giammarino, Joanette Egeli, and Peter Hocking.  “I try to capture my impression and feeling in that moment, observing the shifting effects of light and color.  Nature has such variation in depth with intensity of colors and I am in love with the spectacular contrasts as well as harmonies of sand, sea, sky and the unique, brilliant light here.”  She is a member of Provincetown Art Association and Museum.  Her painting Wharf was accepted to the 2019 Members’ Juried Exhibit at PAAM.  She had her first show Shifting Light exhibit at The Commons, Provincetown in 2022.  She will have her second show Harmony exhibit at The Commons June 11-23, 2025.
